Warbirds - Almost In Reach

Album Review by Dave Smiles

The Melbourne power trio known as Warbirds have recently released their debut EP Almost In Reach. The first thing of note about this no nonsense hard rock band is they don’t sound like a three piece. The individual parts played by the guitar, bass and drums are impressive on their own, but when brought together create something special; and the energy of these three musicians helps to bring them to a level far above just your average band.

Warbirds was formed in 2011 by vocalist / guitarist Anth Nekich and bassist / vocalist Jason Meracis. The band is rounded out with drummer Lee Strapp.

Right from the opening title track Almost in Reach you can hear this band are quality song writers and bring a unique sound to modern rock. Nekich, in addition to having a great voice suited for rock n roll, is quite the accomplished guitar player. The follow up track, Faith is Gone, kicks off with some distorted chords then the guitars make the switch to a clean tone for the verses, grabbing your attention and providing a back drop for the lyrics. This proves clean tones can be just as powerful as heavy distorted. Lyrically, this is a song people can really get into and would be well suited for radio.

Under ‘N’ Over is a shining example of song writing at its finest. Energetic, tight performances from all musicians, awesome guitar solo and memorable vocal harmonies.

If you’re not convinced by now you just need to listen to how the drums lock in and compliment the killer bass intro of Blessed, not to mention when the guitar joins this bass riff later on it becomes an infectious head banger of a song. The structure of this song flows so naturally they make it look easy. Blessed also has a great instrumental section which borders on progressive without being pretentious.

Pursuit of Happiness shows a heavier side to the band with heavy punchy chords that never overshadow the sense of melody that is always present throughout this EP. In contrast to the heaviness of this song is the upbeat lyrics. This would also have one of the stand out solos on the album.

Warbirds consists of three talented musicians who together create something special. I for one am looking forward to future EPs and hopefully an album. Almost In Reach is available from the following link and is well worth checking out.
