The Ugly Kings - Wicked Witch of Wonder (and band review)

by Dave Smiles

With influences from The Doors to The Black Keys, Led Zeppelin to The Rival Sons, The Ugly Kings have created something unique, bringing about the vibes from days of old when music really meant something and bands used it as a way to express something through lyrics and emotive, honest performances.

Mainstream music is now more about fashion, popularity and controversy than actual music, which is why The Ugly Kings is such a fitting name for this band. There’s no fancy dressings used to present this band. It’s just honest rock n roll with a strong emphasis of rhythm and groove.

To date, they have two singles released through iTunes. Wicked Witch of Wonder and Control Freak. Both tracks show how the band creates powerful songs with infectious riffs, tight bass lines and some insanely good drumming; all of which provides a strong back drop for some interesting lyrics delivered with a unique and powerful voice that is as distinct as Johnny Cash. A voice suited to delivering stories. As far as subject matter goes, their songs border on the mystic of Black Sabbath and the earthly feel of Muddy Waters.

The Ugly Kings first came to my attention at Cherry bar early this year. My friend and I were at the bar as their set began and the singer’s voice grabbed our attention. We made our way up to the front and for the next fifty minutes were in complete awe. While the recorded tracks are great to listen to and the song writing is second to none, it’s in a live setting that these guys really shine. The energy is intense and the way the four musicians lock in and play ‘together’ as a ‘band’ is amazing. Most of all, while each member is bursting with energy, they understand that sometimes less is more and resist the urge to overplay when it best serves the song.

Some moan that everything has been done and there is nothing new, others get down to the business of learning what their favourite bands did, and then put their own stamp on the music.  Often, what makes a great band is when the right bunch of musicians bring all their influences together and create something special. This band has a big future ahead of them. They’re the whole package. Trust me, you’ll want to see them live.
