Acolyte – Perceptions

Song Review by Dave Smiles

With the release of Acolyte’s first single, Perceptions, the band show their unique song writing skills and their ability to create a moody atmosphere. With tight performances from a band playing together, each instrument complements the other. Drums highlight the guitar, guitar complements the vocals. The band’s powerful performances are unrelenting, and that’s not to suggest they’re a ‘brutal’ band, their heaviness rests on subject matter of the song and a unified striving for excellence that demands your attention.

The first thing you’re greeted with when listening to this song is the steady and purposeful drumming from Peter MacDonald which is soon accompanied by the hypnotic guitar work from Frank Perna. In terms of vocals, singer Morgan-Leigh Brown delivers from the soul, with passion and conviction. The love of music is evident from the band, and lyrically the song conjures up a tale of uncertainty and the unknown.

Hypnotic and powerful with elements of heavy and soft, Perceptions is a powerful track and one that will stick with you long after you’ve heard it.

This is progressive rock that will delight fans of any bands that has been classed as progressive, from Pink Floyd to Tool, with the darkness of Porcupine Tree. It’s similar in feel to Fates Warning’s album FWX, and Dream Theater’s Octavarium.

Acolyte are making a name for themselves through hard work and playing shows in and around Melbourne. Perceptions is the first single from the band and precedes the upcoming EP due for release soon. It will be interesting to hear more from this band because based on this release alone they could easily explore other areas of light and shade.

Without question a band with a bright future. These acolytes are leading the way.
