Dellacoma - The Dead Will Rise

Album review by Dave Smiles

Fans of Sunset Riot will be pleased to know that Dellacoma Rio has chosen to continue on with his musical endeavours after the group’s disbandment, and this EP shows he still has a lot of passion for music and the drive to forge ahead even after hitting a road block and having to start over. With a group of guest musicians, this release shows Rio’s strengths as a song writer and singer.

The EP kicks off with Change. Its main riff is easily accessible and the lyrics suggest Dellacoma is ready for the next chapter of his career. ‘It’s time to take a chance…’ In under two and a half minutes the band gets right to the point and delivers some killer rock n roll. If treated as marking the rebirth of an exceptionally talented and driven musician, Dellacoma has certainly set the bar high.

The next track is a cover of Tonk’s song Needle in The Red. I took the time to check out the original and found this to be a mostly faithful cover in everything except for the feel in which the vocals are delivered. Whereas Tonk’s version is delivered with an aggressive edge, Dellacoma sings with what could be described as a cocky smirk. It’s an interesting comparison between both versions, offering an insight into how the feel of a song can change with vocal delivery. (Tonk are well worth your time, so check em out)

Under My Skin takes things to the dirty and seductive side of town performed in a raw and dirty manner. A dirty rock n roll song if there ever was one.

The EP closes with its namesake track - Dead Will Rise. This song has everything I love about music in under three and a half minutes. Opening with vocals and clean guitar before building up into an infectious rocker, fantastic lyrics, energetic and passionate singing, raw and heavy performances from the band, melodic guitar work, a killer guitar solo, music and lyrics working together, and leaving the listener on a high. It’s obvious this is a personal song for Rio, and by making it personal it brings so much more to the experience of listening to the music. There’s a lot of motivation within this song to forge ahead in the face of adversity.

As a taste of things to come, the four tracks on this EP whets the appetite for the main course – the release of the debut full length Dellacoma album South of Everything.
