Guzzler - Self Titled

Album Review by Dave Smiles

What Guzzler have done on this album is take the energy and anthem based choruses of pub rock and added a lot more dynamics, and in doing so they’ve come up with some killer tracks. Taking influences from a variety of bands and holding the ‘if it sounds good’ mentality Guzzler provide a soundtrack for good times and knocking back the drinks. Tracks like The Drinks Are On Me and Pub Crawl certainly need no explaining. Straight up songs with a healthy dose of infectious energy. If you’re after something a bit out of the box the threatening vibe of Jekyll & Hyde, which has a fantastic melody, would be for you. Step Up, with its awesome guitar riff and tight performance from the band, suits both pubs and arenas. The weight of these songs could take the band far.

Guzzler are not without a sense of humour as indicated by the title of the instrumental Orgasm In ‘A’ (that issues a challenge to Van Halen's Eruption) as well as Gas, Ass or Grass, and the hilarious Wacky, which starts off with the lyrics - ‘Ricky is a fuck wit…’

Head on a Stick, You’re All Insane and Burning Fire are just a few of the many examples of the killer riffing in these songs. What makes these songs stand out is how the band as a whole injects a strong sense of groove into them.

When I first checked out some of Guzzler’s songs I was expecting unashamed pub rock and that’s exactly what I got, but what made this even more appealing was the incredible hooks and melodies within the songs. The performances are amazing and the production on this album is great. The guitar solos on these songs are set to burn your face off and the anthemic choruses are perfect for the live setting.

With influences taken from Bogan bands like Ac/Dc, Rose Tattoo as well as bands like Rush and Kiss, Guzzler have managed to create an interesting and unique hybrid of rock n roll. You could over analyse it and label it with a new genre name, or you can just check out some awesome songs performed by a hard hitting rock band.

There’s fourteen songs on Guzzler’s self-titled album. The second album to the name and the first with the new line up. All things are in place for Guzzler to take things to the next level. Check out their music and give them some support. They’re certainly a band deserving of it.
