Massive - Full Throttle

Album Review by Dave Smiles

If you haven’t heard of Massive yet you need to track down a copy of this album and give it a listen. Eleven down to earth hard rocking songs filled with influences from the great bands of old like Guns N Roses, Led Zeppelin Ac / Dc, Motorhead and Thin Lizzy. It’s a rock n roll party fuelled by beer and a love of life and music.

This is one of those albums that just continues to get better with repeated listens. Whether it’s the out and out rockers like Burn The Sun, Hollywood and One By One or the more moderately paced riffs of Bring Down The City, Now or Never or The Best of Both Worlds this debut could easily be filled alongside Appetite For Destruction or Back In Black. I’m excited to hear future releases from the band.

Other stand out track on the album include the hard hitting title track Full Throttle, which is simply killer in intensity and performance from the band as a whole. Ghost, which show how good the band are as songwriters, and how good a vocalist Brad Marr is, and Lacey, with its up tempo party riff which shows the diversity of the band; not to mention Dancefloor, with its infectious bass and drum intro it’s a great laugh at the music styles of the mainstream.

Two versions exist of Full Throttle. The original 11 track Australia release and the 15 track international release. Earache Records have seen enough talent within the band to sign them to a 5 album deal. At the moment, Massive are on tour in the UK opening for The Treatment. Their fan base around Melbourne continues to get bigger and bigger, and Triple M has recently picked up on the single One By One.

The expanded release includes cover versions of some classic rock songs. The most noteworthy is Ac / Dc’s If You Want Blood. I’ve heard a lot of people trying to cover Bon Scott and not many can pull it off, certainly not as well as this.

Massive are just one of many Australia bands who are working their arses off to get their music out there. Bands with songs this good and with such a strong work effort, who also manage to not take themselves too seriously and enjoy the party, deserve all the success in the world. Hopefully, Full Throttle will just be the first in a serious of killer albums.
